Educating consumers with disabilities has always been an important part of the Open Doors Organization (ODO) mission. Without both knowledge of their rights and realistic expectations with regard to the services they can expect to receive, travelers with disabilities may not have a pleasant, satisfying experience when they venture forth on a vacation or business trip. Each ODO Easy Access guide, accordingly, includes a Travel Tips section with details on planning air and ground transportation and lodging.
ODO staff members have contributed numerous articles over the years to online and print media, focusing on helpful travel tips, accessible destinations and recent changes in disability rights legislation. They also speak at consumer events such as the Abilities Expo and meetings organized by disability associations such as the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Such invitations are always welcome.
In partnership with the Life Center at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Open Doors Organization developed a course for first-time air travelers.
