Stowage

Since 2010, Open Doors Organization (ODO), in partnership with Global Repair Group, has delivered specialized training workshops for airline ramp crews across the globe – from Los Angeles to Dubai. This one-of-a-kind training was developed in response to the rising number of damages occurring to wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility devices in airline travel. Today, it stands out as a true “difference maker” in improving the handling and treatment of personal mobility aids.

Having trained more than 5,000 airline employees across dozens of stations, this program is designed to significantly reduce damage incidents while also lowering associated costs for airlines.

The training targets both frontline and “below-the-wing” staff, including ground crews, emphasizing the critical importance of mobility devices and the serious consequences that can arise when individuals with disabilities are separated from their customized equipment.

What sets this training apart is its human-centered approach. ODO delivers the content through the lived experiences of travelers with disabilities, sharing real-life stories that underscore the personal impact of mishandled mobility devices. Participants gain a deeper understanding that these devices are not just equipment, but rather an essential extension of a person’s independence, often described as their “arms and legs.” By taking a few extra minutes to take extra care of a mobility device, airline employees can and will make a difference in someone’s life!

Training Agenda:

The training begins with powerful personal narratives from instructors about their disability journeys, highlighting the human side of key issues through telling real life stories about personal travel experiences. In doing so, we create an engaging and impactful foundation.

Key topics covered include:

  • The importance of the mobility device and how to handle interactions with customers with confidence and in a timely manner.
  • Overview of the ADA and the ACAA (14 CFR Part 382)
  • The role and importance of the Complaints Resolution Official (CRO)
  • Discussion of annual mobility device damage rates and associated costs
  • Types of mobility devices, with a focus on the safe handling of powered equipment
  • Priority stowage requirements for aircraft with 100 or more seats
  • Safety procedures for batteries, with an emphasis on lithium-ion
